Karratha detectives have charged a father over an alleged attempt to drown his son at a beach in WA’s Pilbara region on Monday.

The man is accused of driving a vehicle into the ocean at the Dampier Foreshore about 6.15am, with reports the dad then carried the five-year-old boy into deeper water before allegedly holding him under.

A 26-year-old Nickol man has been charged with attempting unlawfully to kill, assault with intent to commission a crime, reckless driving and no authority to drive (never held), authorities confirmed on Monday afternoon.

The accused, who is currently receiving medical attention, was refused bail and is due to appear in court at a later date.

Earlier police commended members of an early morning fitness class who intervened and pulled the boy to safety.

“The child was taken to hospital for assessment, but early indications suggest the child was physically unharmed,” WA Police said.

“The WA Police Force want to commend the bravery and actions of the community members who intervened.”

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers.
