A Perth football club has been caught up in a bizarre Facebook Marketplace scam that resulted in a shipping container full of its gear being sneakily offloaded.
Brazen thieves advertised the blue cargo box on social media and when an interested buyer arrived at John Dunn Memorial Park in the city’s southeast with a truck and cash last Monday evening, it was loaded and taken away.
Kelmscott Junior Football Club officials only realised the next day their container packed with about $3500 of vital equipment was gone.

Club president James Linton said that included footballs, tackle bags and marker cones.
Players told 7NEWS they were “lost” without the gear.

The club appealed to its members and the community to help track down the shipping container, sharing a security image of a truck leaving the park with its possessions.
It was not until the buyer saw the story on 7NEWS over the weekend that they realised what had happened and came forward to explain they had been duped.
“The container has been located and returned to the club along with our equipment,” the club shared in an update post.

The container, owned by the City of Armadale, is being used for storage while the club undergoes renovations.
Police are investigating.
The club is not the first group or person undone in a con involving Facebook Marketplace.

Perth woman Violet Saxton spoke out after losing $4550 on a vehicle she never received and now believes did not actually exist.
She first spotted an online ad for a Mazda 3 last October but when she handed over the cash, she was asked for more money and “cottoned on” that she was being taken for a ride.
“The transaction was pending, I tried to get it stopped, but turned out they couldn’t be stopped,” she said.
“The money got transferred to Bitcoin straight away, so it couldn’t be traced. So I lost $4550.”
