Detectives in Perth are investigating a serious assault in which a 22-year-old man was struck over the head with what is believed to have been a metal pole.

The attack occurred at the Diwali Mela cultural festival, which was held at the Abruzzo Molise Sporting Club in Wattle Grove on Saturday.

Police said two groups clashed between the clubhouse and the playground before the victim was struck with a metal object about 8.30pm.

Police believe that object was a pole.

The man received a serious head injury and was taken by St John WA to Royal Perth Hospital.

Midland detectives want to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or those with information about the people involved.

Diwali Melas are traditionally peaceful events that “celebrate the joyous festival of Diwali” and “enhance the feeling of harmony and brotherhood”.

“However, Diwali Melas hold much greater importance for Hindus living outside India. For them, it is the only means to enjoy Diwali and help their children adapt to the tradition of the glorious Indian festival,” according to the Society for Confluence of Festivals in India.
