Mitchell Freeway: Thousansds of dollars strewn across Perth motorway during suspected drug deal

Mitchell Freeway: Thousansds of dollars strewn across Perth motorway during suspected drug deal

Thousands of dollars in cash has been recovered from a major Perth motorway following a “fiasco” of an alleged drug deal, WA’s top cop says.

It is believed up to $40,000 was sent flying across the Mitchell Fwy in Connolly, in the city’s northern suburbs, about 9.30pm on Monday.

Several members of the public tipped off police, and Commissioner Col Blanch said honest civilians even “came forward with large wads of cash”.

“We believe that up to $40,000 has been recovered,” he said.

Blanch said the incident is still under investigation, but police believe it was a drug transaction gone wrong.

‘Total fiasco’

“It looks like it was a total fiasco by the person involved and probably not one of our smartest (alleged) offenders,” he said.

Police attending the scene seized cash and arrested a driver parked on the roadside.

After searching the man’s car, police allegedly seized a further $8000 and 51g of cocaine.

A 34-year-old Clarkson man has been charged with possession of a prohibited drug with intent to sell or supply, possession of stolen property and having no authority to drive.

He is due to appear in Joondalup Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Joondalup detectives are also investigating a tow truck and motorcycle seen in the area at the time the incident was reported. Both had left by the time police arrived.

It is not the first time money has rained down on a major road in Perth this year.

A bag of cash was thrown or fell from a vehicle travelling on Roe Hwy in January, scattering banknotes across the road under the Kenwick Link overpass.

The free money prompted some motorists to stop their cars to retrieve a share for themselves.

Talk on social media suggested one commuter even pocketed about $10,000.
