More than half a litter of two-day-old puppies cruelly dumped by the side of a Perth road have died, animal welfare advocates say.
The nine puppies weighed just 500 grams each when they were dropped in long, wet grass behind units near the corner of Lord St and Guildford Rd in Bassendean, in the city’s northeast.
They were rushed to Perth Vet Emergency on Tuesday evening after they were found by a member of the public about 6pm.

Tragically five have since died. The remaining four have been placed with foster carers.
RSPCA inspector Peta Janssen said they had worked hard to track down those responsible for dumping the animals, but had so far come up empty.

“There’s no recorded CCTV footage and door knocking has failed to turn up anyone who saw anything or who even has knowledge of a pregnant dog in the area over the past weeks,” she said.
Town of Bassendean rangers have “hit a brick wall too”.
Animal advocates say it is hard to tell what breed the pups are but believe they could be American Staffordshire terriers.

Janssen said it is unclear if the puppies were born locally or dumped by someone from out of town.
“Imagine leaving nine tiny, defenceless puppies lying out in the open on cold, wet grass,” Janssen said.
“Why the person didn’t take them to a shelter such as RSPCA or to a vet clinic is beyond me.”
Authorities said they were worried about the health of the puppies’ mother too.
