A man fighting for life in a Perth hospital has been linked to puzzling reports of a crash and brawl that closed a major highway for several hours.
Witnesses reported a car crash and a group of people fighting in traffic in the west-bound lanes of Reid Hwy, between Altone Rd and the off-ramp to Tonkin Hwy, in Bennett Springs just before 2am on Wednesday.
However, police and paramedics responding to the triple-0 call found the scene was abandoned.

“Police attended the scene however no one was located,” police said.
“Some debris and other items of interest were located.”

An hour after the initial triple-0 call, two males were taken to Joondalup Health Campus — one of them in a critical condition.
Police are working to determine whether their injuries are linked to the incident in Bennett Springs, in the city’s northeast.
Among the debris police found a red bumper and shattered glass.
The investigation of the scene closed the highway for several hours, causing chaos for morning commuters.
