Two children have narrowly escaped drowning at a busy beach in Perth’s south.

The girls, both younger than 10, were rushed to hospital after being pulled from under the water at Port Coogee Marina in North Coogee just before 12pm on Wednesday.

Beachgoers who witnessed the terrifying moment said the girls’ parents called for help after pulling them from the water.

“A lady came over in a panic asking us to get the defibrillator,” Adrian Hills told 7NEWS.

“The parent with them saw them and pulled them out just in time but they managed to take a fair bit of water in.”

Hills said the girls looked “shaken up” and were vomiting seawater on the foreshore, as he and his wife Jennifer ran for the defibrillator.

“I opened it up and we just grabbed it and then took off and ran back to the beach,” he said.

Paramedics on the phone instructed for the girls to be put in the recovery position.

“I just wanted to keep her talking,” Jennifer said of trying to help one of the girls.

“It’s hard to tell a five-year-old to stay awake, so I just asked her what she had for Christmas and that’s an easy conversation.

“I’m not a hero, anyone would have done the same thing.”

The girls were taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital in a stable condition.

The incident comes just days after two children drowned in the Swan River near a popular family picnic spot in Burswood Park.

A four-year-old girl and six-year-old boy were found unconscious near where revellers had gathered for New Year celebrations and close to a children’s playground.
