Two men have been killed when their car became airborne and slammed into a retaining wall in Perth’s southern suburbs.

The men, 24-year-old driver Nathaniel Fussell, and a passenger aged 29, both suffered critical injuries in the crash about 5.10pm on Monday on the Kwinana Fwy in Wandi.

First responders were met by what one WA police officer described as a “horrific crash scene”.

Police said the white Holden Commodore sedan struck a concrete median strip just before the south-bound off ramp at Rowley Rd, causing it to become airborne.

It then crashed into a large retaining wall. CCTV captured the moment the limestone wall exploded as the car crashed through it.

Both men died before they could be taken to hospital.

Local resident Tony Kavanagh said it sounded like “a plane crashing”.

“It was insane. It was so loud,” he said.

Family and friends, including Fussell’s heartbroken mother, visited the crash site on Tuesday.

Flowers were laid in honour of the dead pair.

“It’s a horrific crash scene. It’s one of those things that we’re still piecing together in our investigation,” Major Crash officer in charge Detective Senior Sergeant Adam Matson said.

“It obviously has a rippling effect, not only for family and friends of those young gentleman that have lost their lives but also those first responders that have to attend to those scenes.”

Investigations into the crash are ongoing.

“We’re very early in our investigation however speed is certainly one of those factors that we’re looking at but it won’t be looked at in isolation,” Matson said.

Fussell, who is believed to be a father to a young girl, was set to appear in court next month accused of a one-punch attack on a tourist following the Luke Combs concert two months ago.

Police have appealed to anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
